When passing by Tvrđa there seems to be a lot of work going on around the old Fortress. The mystery for many as they pass by is the piles of dirt as an ongoing excavation of land is in the works. This month Archaeologist from HAZU-a was on site. Osijek has been known for its vast history dating centuries ago. Osijek was once under occupation of the Ottoman empire (1526-1687). With other influences of Austrians Empire when Osijek used to be called Essegg. The Archaeologist have started a search for the oldest medieval entrance in Tvrđa. The location of this entrance has yet to be found during the field research. The exploration has been concentrated to digging in the south-east entrance of the city walls. Thus have so far been limited to what they could uncover because of the roads and other infrastructures belonging to the city of Osijek. Some of these obstacles as such have hinders the Archaeological dig going beyond the current location. It is interesting to note that Archaeologist Tino Leleković confirmed earlier to the news paper Glass-slavonije confirming what they have uncovered so far. "They have found objects of Turkish medieval Osijek, with this we have establish that Turkish presence before its end grew strongly. And it is no longer just assumptions now, but we have evidence. Namely, we found a well and a wall here. It is assumed that the Turkish bastion was perhaps at the crossroads of the European Avenue and the Biljanska Street, or Trpimirova Street.”(Translation excerpt from Glass-Slavonije) Last year they discovered in the Tvrđa the Imperial Door on the outskirts of the walls near river Drava. With the official opening of the Watergates that was reconstructed showing the significance of the find adding Historical value to Tvrđa. The many hidden mysteries of Tvrđa are slowly being discovered with ongoing Archaeological surveys and renovations making it a true historical landmark protected under UNESCO. It will be very interesting to see the past revitalizing of the fortress as some parts get reconstructed.
