Osijek Tourist Board Osijek Craft Beer Festival is one event that should not be missed, with a bigger turn out of beer vendors heading up some amazing craft beer to try. The festival took place Friday and Saturday on this quite pedestrian street called Sunčana in Downtown Osijek. The neighborhood transformed into a vibrant event catching up with some friends and enjoy great music and beer. To enjoy the beer visitor needed to buy a festival Cup “Osijek Craft Beer” to try one or a few of the multitudes of great beer. It’s a learning experience to see what’s new in this creative industry that strives for high quality beer. Each beer is different in the way it brewed in small batches with no additives or preservatives The music is just part of the game of making a great beer festival, it was cool to hear some American classics such as David Bowie, Depeche mood and U2 after all we are in Croatia. There was one song that stood out “Our house in the middle of the street”, it seems to fit because it could have been remixed to “Our beer in the middle of Sunčana street.” Hey, it’s a festival and Osijek fans love great beer and with many visiting tourists from all over the world who can complain. In the evening there were performance by “Red Rooster” on Friday and Saturday evening “Kandžija i Gole žene” Naming some of the craft beer takes a great sense of humor. The names of some of the craft beer really stood out with their wit and humor in the competitive market place. There is a new brand popping up and what helps is coming out to events like the Osijek Craft Beer Festival. It was incredible the energy put into the development of craft beer with each having a unique style from Ales, Lager to stouts and more. The balancing act of having the control of hops, various yeasts and malted barley is what makes a true brew master. It is the science of art that takes a true passion in understanding the process of brewing the perfect batch and being able to repeat its success again and again. Listening to the beer Reps is just the start to finding that right fit. Too Hoppy or too bitter can just throw the game for most enthusiast, however there is always that small crowd that likes it that way. Its always good to go from light to the darker beers similar as wine white to red. Sometimes you will see the crowd snapping the picture of the beer company’s logo and name, so they can ask their restaurant or cafe bar to carry it. There are many people that follow the beer blogs and apps to rate the beer.
With every year it gets bigger and better as the crowds come out to enjoy the Festival. The music and pairing it with some great food keeps people coming back. If you missed the event this year there is always next year. Summer is on its way and there is bound to be more craft beer festivals throughout Croatia. The mystery for many as they pass by is the piles of dirt as an ongoing excavation of land is in the works. This month Archaeologist from HAZU-a was on site. Osijek has been known for its vast history dating centuries ago. Osijek was once under occupation of the Ottoman empire (1526-1687). With other influences of Austrians Empire when Osijek used to be called Essegg. The Archaeologist have started a search for the oldest medieval entrance in Tvrđa. The location of this entrance has yet to be found during the field research. The exploration has been concentrated to digging in the south-east entrance of the city walls. Thus have so far been limited to what they could uncover because of the roads and other infrastructures belonging to the city of Osijek. Some of these obstacles as such have hinders the Archaeological dig going beyond the current location. It is interesting to note that Archaeologist Tino Leleković confirmed earlier to the news paper Glass-slavonije confirming what they have uncovered so far. "They have found objects of Turkish medieval Osijek, with this we have establish that Turkish presence before its end grew strongly. And it is no longer just assumptions now, but we have evidence. Namely, we found a well and a wall here. It is assumed that the Turkish bastion was perhaps at the crossroads of the European Avenue and the Biljanska Street, or Trpimirova Street.”(Translation excerpt from Glass-Slavonije) Last year they discovered in the Tvrđa the Imperial Door on the outskirts of the walls near river Drava. With the official opening of the Watergates that was reconstructed showing the significance of the find adding Historical value to Tvrđa. The many hidden mysteries of Tvrđa are slowly being discovered with ongoing Archaeological surveys and renovations making it a true historical landmark protected under UNESCO. It will be very interesting to see the past revitalizing of the fortress as some parts get reconstructed. Flash back to almost a year ago with UEFA Cup arrived in Osijek for part of the European tour. It’s hard to believe that it has almost been a year since the UEFA Cup arrived in Osijek. Here is what happened one year ago as some will remember that cold day in October. On October 19, 2017 many fans waited in the square Ante Starćevića to be able to take a look at a piece of Football History in Osijek. Much has change to the game since then as new soccer names make history. UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour was in Osijek this past week giving many Football Fans a chance to live their dreams. The Trophy was on display in the main square (Trgu Ante Starčevića) on Wednesday October 19 (2016), and Hotel Osijek for Thursday October 20 (2016). Osijek was one of the lucky places to see it, as it only stopped here and Zagreb. This would be for many fans an early Christmas gift to have a chance like this in Osijek. The arrival of the UEFA Trophy was with much fan fair with many standing in the cold for its arrival. With the bright red Transport Truck carrying its impressive cargo that arrived in Osijek. The Trailer was specially designed for the event with the ability to transform its upper deck as a staging area for the trophy. Spectators were able to go inside the trailer and up the stairs to have their picture taken with the iconic trophy. Some of the fans reported that they had to wait 2 hours for the chance to get a glimpse of the trophy. To keep their spirits alive and well the square provide many games and some musical entertainment. For some of us that did not brave the cold evening, there was a second chance on Thursday morning. The trophy was moved to Hotel Osijek with the café along the Promenade to host the photo session. Many took advantage of it with buses arriving out of town for people of all ages to be able to be part of the event. Football coaches and players from around the world can relate to the importance of having the winning game ball as a symbol of victory for the final game of the season. On display from some of the world’s biggest games in history with the winning game Footballs that won the final game in the UEFA, that has been signed by the players that made it happen. Some of the signatures you may know as they have stood the time of history in Football legacy. Osijek over the year has been the place to be with many exciting events. To see these signatures from the great ones was really impressive. Side notes.
It is interesting to note that since 2009, Champions League winners have not kept the real trophy. Instead a replica a full size replica is awarded to the winning trophy with their name engraved. There is a lot of history with the trophy as there were only five clubs that kept the trophy until the rules changed. Real Madrid Ajax Bayern Munich Milan Liverpool |
