It was a great day to be at the zoo in Osijek with the arrival of spring. The first thing you noticed was the park was quite busy than normal. With families enjoying the day with all the animals being full of life and great weather. There was something new being built this weekend near the front of the Giraffes cage area. One could hear the sounds of a cement mixer and crew working hard. Temporary for the time being the Giraffes have been relocated until the construction is finished. The Mayor of Osijek was at the site earlier that day ![]() The new environment replicates the natural habitat for these animals. The home will be the new enclosure created for Meerkats. Visitors and guest a better chance to see them in action at Osijek Zoo. With a value of building the new exhibit at approximately 400,000 Kuna. “The City of Osijek annually invests 3 to 4,000,000 kuna into the zoo,” noted Mayor John Vrkic adding that the consolidation of the accounts of the city can reach and larger investments for all projects in Osijek. Osijek is the largest zoo in Croatia over the outdoor space area where live, except for sightseeing animals offer numerous events and educational workshops. Mayor Vrkic encourages fellow citizens to take part and visit the zoo, and live in harmony with nature. ( Radio.hrt) The crew have been hard at work, building a new dwelling for the small animals called “Meerkats.” What are the Meerkats some maybe asking that have never seen or heard of them? (Scientific name: Suricata suricatta) They can be described as small in size and stand about 12 inches tall. The average weight is about 2 pounds. Meerkats blend in with their environment with grey or tan fur with a dark stripes across their back. It is interesting to note that around their eyes are small black patches of fur. Their natural habitat is mostly rocky grassland and burrow and dig in the dirt. The meerkats are very social animals and stay close together South Africa was the place of origins living wild in the savannah. Scientist have once considered them to be closely related to the Mongoose family.
