On the weekend of May 26th, 2018 the town of Erdut hosted a medieval fair located just 37km outside the city of Osijek. The town came alive that evening as sunset over the Danube River with music playing and people enjoying themselves the festival was in full swing. Arriving as the thunderstorms quickly disappeared didn’t even make a dent for the temperature cool down. The sounds of Music from Adamovch castle with the smell of fresh gourmet food captured the attention of many. The market stands were full of great locally made products from food to wine. It was a welcoming experience to taste and try local food and wine. The history of Erdut date back to Ottoman Empire with famous moment of Turks leaving the region in 1688. The first record piece of history realled as it was first mentioned in 1335 as Erdod or Erdewd.
The Medieval actors brought life to the function as they strolled through the function drawing the attention of many. Around 7pm they made their way to the beat of the drum at the castle on the hillside. Their performance was incredible to watch with the mix of comedy, humor and sword fights delighted the audience. The best part of the performance was when a lady from the performance had the chance to take on the battle with a frying pan. (Need we say more) The spectators had a fantastic opportunity to be able to see the medieval market located beside the tower. With archers on location guest had a chance to learn more about archery and fire a bow and arrow with guided instructions. The local tourist board best describes the location “The medieval town is now only a ruin. The main quadrangular tower underwent unfortunate reconstruction and was turned into the tomb of the Cseh family; only wall fragments of the old tower can be seen today. There is a Renaissance tower on the same location, with a circular ground-plan, loopholes and a projected upper coronate on the consoles; a part of the old wall with windows is by the tower. In the 19th century the Csehs built in Erdut a mansion surrounded with a park.” (i) The medieval fair gave the perfect ambience to showcase the towns rich history and vineyards of Erdut.
