Slama Land Art Festival started earlier this past week on August the 6 and runs until Sunday, August 12. It was an international scene with various Artist arriving from different Countries to come together to build their own creations. This year according to “Slama Land Art Facebook” page the theme was called “ Slama Fest posvetiti FEMINI, odnosno, ŽENSKOJ ENERGIJI”, which can be loosely translated “Female and Woman Energy.” As one wanders through the work and notices the juxtaposition of the female figure against the backdrop of the river. To examine each straw sculpture piece with an open mind one can justify the meaning of the title. Throughout the weekend was plenty of things to see and do. With interactive and creative workshops, dance and acrobatic, Musical performances and the grand finale. Arriving on Sunday as the sunset was the ideal time to get to see the Straw Art and watch the Slama Land Art Team putting on the finishing touches under the direction of Nicola Faller. This was the 13 annual show for the Festival of Slama Land Art. To be amongst the sculptures as the sun sets is an incredible experience that only happens once a year. It’s a great place to catch up with old friends and make new ones. The event attracts many visitors to take part in the event. Just a short drive of 5 minutes across the River Drava to Bilje on the river banks of Stara Drava River. The Fire crews were on scene today for safety when we arrived because of the heat of the day and the straw drying up, it could very easily create a fire. It’s Ironic to think because later at the end of the day when all is said and done. The tradition for Slama Land Art Festival sets a straw sculpture on fire. The sculptures with nature as the backdrop seemed to be very surreal because most of us see art in the museum or in a city setting. It is rare for most people to see Art intertwine with nature in such a way. Perhaps that is why the topic of Woman Energy being in this setting is necessary. Each work of art had its own style and form using the same material of straw. As night set there was plenty of entertainment with live music and dance. Sing Song Swing Jazz group was on stage performing some classical jazz it was a perfect combination to have people enjoy and relax in the festivities. This is just part of the event that we saw but there were so many other great artists from Musicians, Dancers and singer to take part as the sun slowly began to set. The media arrived as night fell with more and more people arriving with the main festivities underway. People were anxiously waiting for the much-anticipated grand finale of the event to see Fireworks plus the sculpture on fire. We look forward to seeing more amazing performances, sculptures and land art. The event went incredible well, and special thanks to all the Artists and volunteers that made the festival run smoothly.
