Osijek-One Written by James Mac Donald This Tuesday on August 11 in Osijek the old Villa Batory was starting to show signs of great progress. The roof was looking great with a newly constructed roof. The façade was meticulous being reconstructed with its original decoration motifs of small sculptures. Most people in Osijek when I spoke to in the past five years thought nothing good could be done and it was stuck in limbo. This year the villa Batory starts to be turned back into its former glory, as one of the most Iconic buildings of Art Nouveau era. The time Villa Batory was built had happened during the industrial era and the height of Osijek’s good fortune. The villa Batory was sold last year after being lost and forgotten to fall apart and sink into the abyss like the many other buildings in Osijek-Baranja County. The public has only dreamt that maybe it could be saved. However, Villa Batory had remained stuck in years of paperwork and other legal details. The Philanthropist, patron humanitarian “Branko Ostović” had bought it for five million kunas from the Osijek KBC and immediately gave an extraordinary announcement that his only goal was to protect it from further decay. It is interesting how Ostović claims that he has absolutely no business plans with it. "I bought it solely to save it from further decay. We are starting on the renovation of the building and the return of the old splendour/brilliance, and generations after me will think about how they will use it. Now I can afford to deal with the arranging this building purely out of gusto and love of beauty ", said the new owner of the villa. The villa is dated from 1906. Located on Radićeva Street.
(Loosely translated from source of Osijek 031) Original text Zanimljivo je kako Ostović tvrdi da nema apsolutno nikakvih poslovnih planova s njom “Kupio sam ju isključivo da ju spasim od daljnjeg propadanja. Krećemo u renovaciju zgrade i povrata starog sjaja, a generacije nakon mene neka razmišljaju kako će ju iskoristiti. Sada si mogu priuštiti da se bavim uređenjem ovog objekta čisto iz gušta i ljubavi prema ljepoti“, rekao je novi vlasnik vile iz 1906. godine u Radićevoj ulici The renovations are said to be in the range of forty-five million kunas. The purpose and use of the building are yet to be known to the public. It just goes to show you "never say never" as positive things do happen in Osijek.
